Headaches can be caused by spinal problems.

Headaches are a common ailment, but they're not normal. Headaches are a sign that something is wrong with your body. The three most common causes of headaches are: physical trauma, emotional stress or chemical toxins. Sometimes there may be a combination of factors.

Treating headaches with drugs that numb your nervous system can cause side effects such as kidney failure or liver damage and they don't correct the underlying cause of the headache. Using drugs to deal with pain can cause a person to ignore health problems that will only get worse without treatment.

One common cause of headaches is from spinal bones in the neck that aren't supporting the head properly. Some people are surprised to learn that their headaches are being caused by problems in their lower back. The spine helps to support the weight of the head. If bones are misaligned in the lower back, the upper spine compensates, shifting the head off center causing stress that can lead to headaches. A symptom of this problem is a reduced ability to turn your head that due to gradual onset often goes unnoticed. These problems - or sublaxations - affect nerves, muscles and even the blood supply to your head.

Dr. Nygaard, founder of Atlas Family Chiropractic in Asheville, NC, explains sublaxations" "A subluxation is the result of spinal bones with improper motion or position affecting nerve communications between your brain and your body; it is a stress response. Muscles go into spasm. Spinal bones lock up and adjacent nerves are choked or chafed. This interferes with the control and regulation of all your body's systems. This garbles communication between the brain and parts of your body."

What Causes Subluxations?

There are three basic causes of subluxations. Physical causes could include slips and falls, accidents, repetitive motions and improper lifting. Emotions such as stress, anger and fear can also contribute to subluxations. Chemical causes may include: alcohol, drugs, preservatives, environmental pollution and poor diet.

Nerve Health Equals Total Health

Distorted nerve communications can be an underlying cause of many health problems beyond just headaches and back pain. For example, interference with nerve impulses going to or from your stomach can lead to stomach problems.

Your nervous system controls every cell, tissue, organ and system of your body. These nerve impulses travel through your spine, so having a spine free of vertebral subluxation is essential for optimal health. Only a chiropractic examination can detect subluxations and only chiropractic adjustments reduce its effect to your nervous system in a natural, non-invasive manner.

While spinal problems aren't the only cause of headaches, a thorough chiropractic examination will detect subluxation patterns and can determine if spinal problems could be causing your headaches. If subluxations are present, you're likely to benefit from chiropractic care.

Chiropractic Care is Safe, Natural and Non-invasive

Dr. Nygaard utilizes the science and philosophy that the body is a self-healing, self-regulating organism. He is a Board Certified Atlas Orthogonist and is the only Atlas Orthogonist specialist in Western North Carolina. Using atlas orthogonal care, Dr. Nygaard can adjust irregularities in the spine allowing the body to heal itself. Once the spine is in its proper "orthogonal" position, nerves can function properly and many symptoms, like headaches, will ease or be cured entirely.

Some patients enjoy results quickly. Others notice a slow decline in their symptoms after several weeks of chiropractic care. If you've had chronic headaches for many years, improvement can take time. If your doctor can't seem to find the cause of your headaches it might be time to seek chiropractic care. Without drugs or surgery, chiropractic adjustments could be the key to easing your suffering. For more information, visit:
