With such a huge range of travel insurance providers offering their own brand of travel insurance, it's often the price of the policy that factors the most into a consumer's decision. While it's always tempting to go for the cheapest option, it's always important to run through your policy with a fine-tooth comb and make sure that it meets your needs. Too often people assume that all travel insurance is the same and find themselves in for a shock when it comes time to make a claim. Here are five travel insurance pitfalls to keep an eye out for:
Pre-existing medical conditions
If you have a pre-existing medical condition then be sure to check the medical section of your policy very carefully. Some cheaper policies will not cover you if you, a travel companion or family member have a pre-existing condition that could affect your travel plans. Your best bet in this situation is to go with
travel health insurance from a specialist provider - there are a few companies out there that will cover a large range of conditions from small to severe so be sure to shop around for the best policy for your needs.
Delays getting to the airport
Some policies will only cover the breakdown of public transport, so if you're driving to the airport yourself it's worth checking. Similarly, if you're delayed in getting to the airport and miss your connecting flight then you won't necessarily be covered for things like unplanned overnight hotel bills. Again, check your policy carefully.
Pregnancy
Morning sickness can come on at any time so be sure to plan ahead. Just because you're feeling fine at the time of booking your trip and travel insurance doesn't necessarily mean that you'll be the same when it comes time to set off. If you're unlucky enough to be struck down with severe morning sickness and aren't up to travelling, you may not be covered - so check your policy carefully.
Visas
Don't just assume that by booking your flights, hotels and travel insurance that you're all set for your trip. If the country you're heading to requires you to hold a visa before they'll grant you access then be sure to get it sorted out well in advance - if you arrive at your destination and have neglected to arrange your visa before travelling then your insurance policy may not cover you.
Insurance jargon
If you don't understand anything in the wording of your policy be sure to put any questions you have to your provider before signing up. It's naïve to adopt an 'it'll be fine' attitude when it comes to travel insurance; you don't want to be sprung with a nasty surprise when it comes to making a claim. Clarify any language you're unsure about if you want to be sure that you won't end up out of pocket.
