Barcelona FC is widely regarded to be one of the top teams in Spanish football, rivalled only by Real Madrid in its greatness. Although a large part of this success comes from the team's management, it must be remembered that some of the players on the Barcelona team have been playing for many years, and their dedication to the sport cannot be overlooked. Here, three of Barcelona FC's current top players are profiled.
Carlos Puyol is Barcelona's captain, and has played for the team since 1995, when he was seventeen years old. He made his debut for the first team in 1999, in central defence, and since then has gone on to win many titles. Barcelona won a league under his leadership in the 2004/5 season, and he captained the Spanish national side in the 2006 World Cup. Spain became winners of Euro 2008 in Austria and Switzerland, and Puyol was instrumental in this victory. Puyol remains as Barcelona's captain, and is unremittingly loyal to the team: the fact that he has been a member for fourteen years places him as an idol of Barcelona for fans.
Originally from Argentina, Lionel Messi first played for Barcelona in the Under 14s. He made his debut in the 2003/4 season, at the age of just sixteen, and in 2005 became the youngest player ever to score for Barcelona's first team. He went on to win many accolades, and at the age of eighteen led Argentina to victory in the under 20s World Cup in Holland. In light of this achievement he was voted best player in the tournament, as well as statistically being top goal scorer. In 2008 Messi was made runner up in the FIFA World Player Awards.
Thierry Henry is considered to be one of the best forwards in world football. Originally from France, he is most famous for his contribution to the Arsenal squad, however his success in other areas, including in Spanish football, cannot be overlooked. Henry began playing at seventeen, and quickly made a name for himself. In 2000 he was named as one of Arsenal's greatest ever players, and their highest goal scorer. He was also instrumental in France's 1998 World Cup victory, and, following his accolades gained at Arsenal, went on to become Barcelona's top goal scorer in the 2007/8 season.
With talent such as this on the squad, it is not surprising that
Barcelona tickets sell out so quickly, or that it is arguably the best team in Spain at the moment.
